"Children Involuntarily Leaving Home"

It has been my unfortunate experience to know of several children who, when they reached the age of eighteen, were told to move out by their parents. Usually they are told to take the clothes on their back and what few things they might have and leave. They then usually have to find a friend or friends who can take them in until they can establish themselves enough to live on their own. Some parents who do this will defend their actions by letting the child know that they plan to do this several years in advance. I do not think this justifies it. All it does is have a negative impact on the child's self image earlier. Here are some scriptural teachings to show that the parent who does this is actually behaving, as the scripture puts it, worse than an infidel.

1 Corinthians 9:7-11 What soldier ever serves at his own expense? Who plants a vineyard, and doesn't eat of its fruit? Or who feeds a flock, and doesn't drink from the flock's milk?
8 Do I speak these things according to the ways of men? Or doesn't the law also say the same thing?
9 For it is written in the law of Moses, "You shall not muzzle an ox while it treads out the grain." Is it for the oxen that God cares,
10 or does he say it assuredly for our sake? Yes, it was written for our sake, because he who plows ought to plow in hope, and he who threshes in hope should partake of his hope.
11 If we sowed to you spiritual things, is it a great thing if we reap your fleshly things?

Based on the scripture above we see that we are to treat an ox a certain way and that then also applies to men. When a man releases a servant God's law states that the man is to be generous with him when he sends them out.

Deuteronomy 15:13-14 When you let him go free from you, you shall not let him go empty:
14 you shall furnish him liberally out of your flock, and out of your threshing floor, and out of your winepress; as Yahweh your God has blessed you, you shall give to him.

Deuteronomy 24:14 Thou shalt not oppress an hired servant that is poor and needy, whether he be of thy brethren, or of thy strangers that are in thy land within thy gates:

In the parable of the Prodigal Son when the rebelious son decided to leave he asked his father for his portion of his inheritance. Even though the son was rebelious he was due the inheritance and his father gave it to him.

Luke 15:12 And the younger of them said to his father, Father, give me the portion of goods that falleth to me. And he divided unto them his living.

The scripture teaches that you should not muzzle the ox and then uses that teaching to show how we are to treat men. In the same way if one was to generously provision a servant when he left so we should realize that we should be even more generous and helpful with a child. It is my belief that the scripture therefore condemns a man who sends out his children with out giving them what they need to be able to set up their own household and begin to provide for themselves. The parent who does this is worse than an unbeliever.

1 Timothy 5:8 But if anyone doesn't provide for his own, and especially his own household, he has denied the faith, and is worse than an unbeliever.
